PTSD Awareness Day

June 27th is PTSD awareness day,

More than likely you have seen this acronym before. Most of you probably associate this acronym with current military personnel and veterans. Undoubtedly you have seen news stories, articles, and even advertisements that have made an effort to bring to light the alarming amount of US soldiers returning from war inflicted with this disorder. You’ve seen it on the big screen with the recent release of “American Sniper” and the story of Chris Kyle. But what is PTSD? Who can be impacted by this condition? What are its symptoms? How is it treated?

PTSD – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental disorder that can affect anyone who experiences or witnesses any terrifying or traumatic event that triggers fear, shock, horror, or helplessness. PTSD was first defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III), published by the America Psychiatric Association (APA), in 1980. Even after thirty-five years, research into the cause, impact, and treatment of this disorder continues.

Traumatic events can include:

  • Military combat and atrocities of war
  • Natural disasters
  • Sexual assaul

  • Violent death

Symptoms of PTSD:

  • Flashbacks (reliving the trauma event)
  • Nightmares
  • Avoidance and withdrawal from loved ones
  • Emotional numbness
  • Guilt, Depression, Worry
  • Loss of interest in once enjoyable activities
  • Easily startled and often “on edge”
  • Difficulty sleeping and loss of focus
  • Angry outbursts
